The mandola, formerly the bandola or vandola, is a pear-shaped plucked string instrument with frets and four pairs of strings played with a plectrum. This chordophone evolved from the lute in Italy in the 16th century, giving rise to the mandolin family. It is descended from the medieval guiterna and the Renaissance-period mandora.
